MISSION

IAMA THEATRE COMPANY is an award-winning, Los Angeles-based ensemble of artists committed to cultivating new voices, creating new works that push boundaries and take risks, and building an inclusive community that inspires and supports a new generation of theatre-makers and audiences.

VISION

We envision a Los Angeles theatre landscape that is bold, inclusive, and artistically vibrant—one that offers meaningful professional opportunities for theatre-makers while delivering extraordinary theatrical experiences for audiences. We see IAMA as a major facilitator in the evolution of this landscape, modeling change and possibility for the American theatre as we continue on the path toward becoming a lasting mid-size theatrical institution in the greater Los Angeles area. Rooted in artistic excellence, our legacy will be defined by dynamic opportunities for both artists and audiences: developing daring new works from the ground up, forging partnerships with like-minded theatre companies, and championing an ensemble-driven ethos that centers collaboration, community, and shared artistic leadership. IAMA believes artists deserve to thrive, and is committed to setting the highest standards of care and sustainability by providing a living wage for everyone who contributes to our work—from actors, playwrights, directors, and designers, to staff, stagehands, front-of-house teams, and beyond. Our Education platform will be at the core of our outreach to our wider Los Angeles community, including paid fellowships for Artists in Residence. Our audience engagement and marketing efforts will strive to redefine accessibility, inviting those who may never have stepped into a theatre to discover the transformative power of live performance. At IAMA, our doors will always be open.

VALUES

We have set forth the following values as we seek to better support the creation of art and the cultivation of artists that challenge boundaries and take risks. We will work to foster an inclusive community that inspires artists today, and for generations to come. We will hold ourselves and our collaborators to the highest caliber of respect, trust, and integrity by maintaining efficient communication, institutional transparency, and personal boundaries.  We pride ourselves on actively acknowledging and respecting our artists, communities, histories, and points of view, while being a safe space where artists can create regardless of gender, race, ability, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, and access.

  • CREATIVITY - We support the creation of art and the cultivation of artists that challenge boundaries and take risks all while fostering an inclusive community that inspires the artists of the future generations.

  • PROFESSIONALISM - We hold ourselves and our collaborators to the highest caliber of respect, trust, and integrity by maintaining efficient communication, institutional transparency, and personal boundaries.

  • CARING - We actively acknowledge and respect our artists, communities, histories, and points of view.

  • ACCEPTANCE - We are a safe space where artists can create regardless of gender, race, ability, socioeconomic background, sexual orientation, and access.

  • TRUST - The foundation of trust is having confidence in knowing we all share the same vision, goals and values. Trust and mutual respect lead to accountability.

  • COMMUNICATION - We believe in full transparency and authentic communication to create a fearless environment within the ensemble to better communicate beyond the ensemble.

We hope you will join us and challenge us as we know these values are ambitious, anti-racist, and counter white supremacist culture. Please stay tuned as we continue to report back on our strides towards a brighter future of theatre, where everyone is heard, paid, and respected equitably for their talent.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

IAMA Theatre Company is based in Los Angeles on the sacred site of the Gabrielino/Tongva Nation, the aboriginal tribe of the Los Angeles Basin and the true First Angelenos. The Gabrielino/Tongva people continue to remain in relationship with these lands through ceremony, culture, and stewardship. We recognize the Gabrielino/Tongva Nation as the first stewards and traditional caretakers of this land, honoring their spiritual connection to it and their role as the first storytellers of our Los Angeles community. We thank them for their strength, perseverance, and resistance, and we respect and value the many ways their cultural heritage and beliefs continue to hold significance to the living people.

The Gabrielino/Tongva Nation has been recognized by the State of California, The California General Assembly, and the City Council of Los Angeles. Despite the Federal Government’s long treatment of the Gabrielino/Tongva as a Tribe under Federal jurisdiction through the Mission Indian Agency, they have not been formally recognized. Federal Recognition will allow them to reclaim their identity, and give the tribe the full rights and privileges of a sovereign nation. For more information, please visit gabrielinotongva.org.
