Dear IAMA Community,
Happy World Theatre Day!
Today, we celebrate the transformative power of theatre—an art form that reflects our shared humanity, challenges perspectives, and brings communities together. In a world that feels increasingly uncertain, the need for bold artistic expression has never been more urgent.
This year has tested us in ways we never imagined. From the literal wildfires that ravaged our city to the troubling new policies threatening the creative freedoms we hold dear, it has become clear that our work is not only vital, but also extremely vulnerable.
We were proud to receive our first-ever National Endowment for the Arts grant this season, allowing us to expand programming, increase artist wages, and reduce ticket prices for our 2024 New Works Festival. But with new federal NEA guidelines for arts funding attempting to limit the breadth, depth, and diversity of the stories we’re able to tell, we face an unsettling reality: our freedom of artistic expression - and our ability to produce - is under threat.
IAMA believes deeply that cultivating and amplifying a diverse range of voices and new work is essential. We stand firmly with the LGBTQ+ community, especially our trans siblings, and remain committed to building a theatre and artistic community that is bold, vibrant, representative, and inclusive. Free expression is the heartbeat of our work, and we will not waver in our fight to keep our stages open to all.
This World Theatre Day, we invite you to stand with us. A $25 donation can help us keep the lights on, the stories flowing, and our artistic expression safe from censorship. Your support makes it possible to nurture bold new voices and create a space where creativity knows no bounds.
We also encourage you to join Theatre Communication Group’s Theatre Advocacy Week 2025—a powerful movement to defend the arts and advocate for policies that keep theatre accessible and thriving.
It is an incredible honor to continue our work with you, and alongside our fellow theaters in Los Angeles and across the country. These are not easy times, and we are more grateful than ever to be surrounded by a community of artists and audiences fighting the good fight and making great art.
With love, appreciation, and solidarity,
Cara and Stefanie
